Congohounds

Dogs for nature protection

Congohounds is a fascinating project of Swiss veterinary Marlene Zähner.

Since 2011 she has build up a dog squad in Virunga National Park, located in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The project not only supports the protection of wildlife but also social development.

How to end up in an arts exhibition with dogs

My name is Ralf Denzer.
I am not from the Bavarian Forest and I am not an arts expert.

But there was this lithography "Hommage à Aimée et Marguerithe Maeght" which I bought as a student. I browsed in a gallery and decided to buy this piece without knowing the cost and that it was by Joan Miró. For many years it was my biggest pride.

Until 2017 my number one got 40 additional friends. I never thought about showing them publicly or buying additional art.

I have known the Bavarian Forest from childhood and my memories go back to forced picking of mushrooms and berries. How did I hate blueberries. One of my childhood friends was Ingrid Rankl from Zwiesel. In 2016 she asked me whether I would be willing to show my art in Bayerisch Eisenstein - a schoolfriend of hers has a gallery there. During negotiations with Christian Bayerl I decided to donate my lending fees to an environmental or social project. I left it to Ingrid to choose a project. This is how I ended up with dogs.

In order to improve my collection I bought another 15 pieces at the time. Today the count is at over 270. The collection comprises lithographs, etchings, woodcuts, aquatinta, linocuts and mixed techniques.

Before the start of the exhibition I had a look at the Congohounds project in Virunga. I immediately knew that Ingrid had made an excellent choice.

Got a gallery? I bring the art.

And the dogs along.
